“Everything about the place was different: the architecture, the landscape, the food and the accent. I ended up on this idyllic little island, reached only by a causeway, and it was love at first sight.” |

“The unspoiled coastal island, where gentle breezes, white sandy beaches, and glorious sunny days seem endless, is pleasantly stuck in a time warp. It’s an enigma of compelling contrasts and perfect harmony, effortlessly blending the old and new, cherished history and modern comforts, grand surroundings and simple pleasures, energizing sports and unadulterated relaxation.” |

“Islands always seem to operate in a different time zone, and that’s particularly true of the barrier islands separated from the Georgia coast by salt marshes, tidal rivers and backwater sounds.” |

Farther south, we passed to the west of the Funky St. Simons Island and its regal neighbor, Sea Island with its million-dollar homes and opulent Cloister resort. Just past the city of Brunswick, we headed over the Downing Musgrove Causeway to Jekyll Island , where the ghosts get grander treatment. Popularized in the early 1900's by Rockefellers, Goodyears and Morgans, Jekyll Island is an odd blend of stately houses, bland modern brick bungalows, porcelain sand beaches and miles of nature trails.... |

The people of Brunswick remembered the World War II Liberty Ship and the people who built and sailed them and so they erected a 23-foot scale model in downtown's newly renovated Mary Ross Park. Built in 1991 and christened the City of Brunswick, the model was the 100th Liberty Ship built in Brunswick after a lapse of 45 years... |

This is so-called Bird Corner, at the south end of Jekyll Island. It's a stop-over for migrating birds, some of them having traveled thousands of miles, a chance to refuel and regroup. They may not stop again until reaching Cuba.... |

Coastal golf at attractive rates doesn't get much better than the Hampton Club on St. Simons Island, just east of Brunswick, Georgia...The 18-hole course on the north end of the island meanders through ancient forests and across a sea of salt marshes, where four of the holes on the back nine are located on hammock islands connected by wooden bridges....There are other coastal courses …(Sea Palms, Retreat, Seaside on St. Simons island).. nearby on Jekyll Island and ..Brunswick.... |

End your swing around the state with a leisurely trip south from Savannah to Georgia's Golden Isles, a string of lush subtropical barrier islands that lies just off the coast. Some are wildlife refuges but the developed islands of Jekyll, St. Simons and Sea Islands are accessible via bridges and offer superb beaches, great golf, and a wide range of accommodations. Theses sandy shores are also the perfect spot to unfold your beach chair, gaze out at the blue Atlantic, and reflect on your journey through Georgia... |

As beach-bound vacationers roll along US Highway 17 (and Interstate 95) toward Georgia's storied coastal retreats, they begin to see silhouettes of the ancient, moss-bearded live oaks ahead- the signature of the state's sun-blessed barrier islands.
The flat, well-traveled highway also serves up vistas of the coast's saltwater marshlands, an incredibly productive environment that teems with sea life. These grand, spirit-lifting sweeps of green-gold grasses are sure to lift the sagging spirits of even the most work-weary traveler in search of a restorative retreat... |

On St. Simons Island, for example, watch for what have become known as tree spirits. Peering out from the trunk, between two large branches of a large oak or from the stub of a long-vanished branch, you might see the unmistakable image of weathered faces. The images, lovingly created by skilled hands, immortalize the spirits and souls of the countless sailors who lost their lives at sea aboard the mighty sailing ships that were made from St. Simons Island oaks.... |

We arrived late on Saturday to swampy. Spanish Moss-draped St. Simons, a barrier island off the coast of Georgia. Cultural readjustment was quick but not instantaneous. Startled by a honk from an oncoming car, I lurched with Bostonian shame over some unknown driving offense. ALAS, IT WAS JUST A FRIENDLY HELLO....MORE SUCH GREETINGS CAME THE NEXT MORNING AT THE SERVICE AT Christ Church, an idyllic white building on the island and one of the oldest Episcopal churches in the country. The lovingly kept grounds alone are worth a visit.... |

The Jekyll Island Historic District gives tour operators the ability to create unique experiences. Groups can take tea with an actress portraying Mrs. Rockefeller or schedule a dolphin cruise. They might take a tram tour of the entire district or explore one of the cottages from basement to attic. Some guests could join a guided nature walk on the beach while others simply enjoy the view from a rocking chair.... |

Among the island's many charms are marshes teeming with wildlife, public parks (such as Neptune Park, the oceanfront picnic area and playground), un-crowded beaches, miles of bicycle paths, antiques shops, art galleries, the Pier Village with restaurants and shopping, a historic lighthouse and a fishing pier where anglers come early to stake out a spot- not to mention friendly people. |

The biggest draw to Jekyll is its beaches, here you'll find a multitude of recreational opportunities to enjoy them. Horseback riding is the perfect means to explore the beaches and dunes, as well as the maritime forest of live oaks for which Georgia is noted. As you amble along on your trusty steed, keep your eyes open for the resident wildlife. You may catch a glimpse of hawks, egrets, herons, and even alligators. |
