Little St. Simons Island is a 10,000 acre, privately owned, unspoiled barrier island with over 7 miles of undeveloped Atlantic Ocean beach for shelling, strolling and swimming. It is accessible only by boat from St. Simons Island.
Little St. Simons Island was purchased in 1908 by the Eagle Pencil Company as a source of cedar wood for making pencils. The island’s cedar trees were unusable for making pencils; however, Philip Berolzheimer, owner of Eagle Pencil Company, fell in love with the island’s beauty and purchased it as a special retreat for his family and friends. In the early 1900s, Mr. Berolzheimer would gather a group of friends for southern sojourns to his beloved Little St. Simons Island. Among them were some of New York City’s most prominent policy-makes of the day. The group, who came to be known as the “Eight Bandits,” would spend weeks on Little St. Simons Island fishing, hunting, playing parlor games and enjoying each other’s company and outdoor activities. The flag, which they created to commemorate their group, was a line of eight ducks flying over a running deer. Today, a slightly modified version of this flag serves as the Island’s logo.
