Barrier islands run the length of the Atlantic Ocean, but many have fallen prey to land speculators, chain motels and fast food franchises. Cumberland Island, the largest of the Georgia barrier islands, remains in its natural state due to the efforts of its early owners, conservationists and the National Park Service. In 1972, Congress designated it a National Seashore.

Your visit will begin with an orientation talk before you board the tour boat for the 45 minutes ride to the island. A National Park Service ranger will be available for questions during this time. The ruins of Dungeness Mansion and Carnegie Estate are a short walk (3/4 mile) from the dock. The self-guided Dungeness Trail focuses on the island's fascinating history and provides an opportunity to view a variety of natural areas and wildlife. Beach access is available. Restrooms and water are the only facilities available on the island. If you plan to spend the day on the island, you should bring a picnic lunch and plenty to drink, wear clothing and shoes appropriate to walking in whatever weather is in season, plan for the possibility of rain and bring insect repellent.
