BRUNSWICK AND THE GOLDEN ISLES OF GEORGIA

One hour from the cities of Savannah, Georgia and Jacksonville, Florida, lies the coastal city of Brunswick, Georgia. It is rimmed on the west by Interstate 95 and on the east by the Golden Isles of Georgia, just 15 minutes off I-95 and the Atlantic Ocean beyond. No Madison Avenue advertising gimmick, the name "GOLDEN ISLES" dates back to the 1500s when adventurers came seeking gold and found a far different treasure in wide expanses of golden marshes, days of brilliant golden sun and a sunset glow they had not experienced anywhere else in their travels. The name remains equally descriptive almost 500 years later.

BRUNSWICK

The City of Brunswick offers the visitor a true picture of a seaport town which has managed to enter the last half of the twentieth century with a unique blend of modern industry, active commercial fishing and ecological sensitivity. Tourism provides a base for the county's economy, and travelers along Interstate 95 or US 17 Coastal Highway, are offered a range of accommodations either for a one night pass-through or a vacation destination. At the intersection of I-95 and US 341 lies BRUNSWICK USA - a cluster of 13 motels with over 1,400 rooms and 16 restaurants within easy walking distance. . . all 5 minutes from downtown and 15 minutes from the islands. US 17 has hundreds of motel rooms along a 2 mile strip. See the ocean vessels come into port, watch the shrimpers unload at the docks along Bay Street and then sample the catch of the day at one of the area's fine restaurants. Do a driving tour through Old Town Brunswick with its elegant Victorian homes and pleasant parks and take a dinner cruise on the casino/cruise ship.

ST. SIMONS ISLAND

Roughly the size of Manhattan, St. Simons Island is the largest of Georgia's Golden Isles and only a five mile drive from the mainland via causeway, across the vast Marshes of Glynn. Few spots on the eastern seaboard can match the quiet beauty or the historical significance of this island. Today, St. Simons Island is a unique blend of resort facilities, specialty boutiques and superb restaurants, residential communities, historic points of interest and large tracts of land left virtually untouched for centuries. The island boasts 99 holes of championship golf, beaches, miles of bike trails and 11 vacation properties, ranging from a family-style motor court to a luxury beachfront hotel. No building can be above the tree line, so the views are spectacular.

SEA ISLAND

Sea Island was an undeveloped barrier island where, in 1928, it was purchased by industrialist Howard E. Coffin. Mr. Coffin envisioned an exclusive resort area, and today his dream is fulfilled in THE CLOISTER HOTEL - recognized as one of the greatest hotels in the world. Here guests enjoy tennis, water sports, horseback riding, skeet/clay target shooting, spa, club socializing and one of the country's best golf courses. Sharing the island with The Cloister is a cottage colony of over 300 homes, many of which are available for vacations rentals. Charter one of the "vintage" yachts for an evening cruise.

LITTLE ST. SIMONS ISLAND

Little St. Simons Island is a 10,000 acre, privately owned, unspoiled barrier island with over 7 miles of undeveloped Atlantic Ocean beach for shelling, strolling and swimming. It is accessible only by boat from St. Simons Island. Preserved for nearly a century as a family retreat, The Lodge on Little St. Simons Island accepts a maximum of 32 overnight guests. A very capable staff will make your personal stay or corporate retreat a success. The accommodations on Little St. Simons Island are elegantly rustic, spacious and very comfortable, in keeping with the island's character. Reservations may be made by the room, cottage or entire Island. This coastal wilderness setting is ideal for recreation, exploration and relaxation. Miles of forested paths encourage hiking, bicycling and horseback riding, while winding waterways beacon guests to enjoy a boat or canoe outing. All meals, activities and recreational gear are included in the rates.

JEKYLL ISLAND

In the late 1800s, a group of northern millionaires, among them the Rockefellers, Vanderbilts, Goulds, Astors, Morgans and Goodyears, sent a team of experts to find a spot that would offer natural beauty, complete privacy and excellent weather so they might escape the northern winters. They selected JEKYLL ISLAND, and under their direction it became the most exclusive resort in the nation. The Jekyll Island Club was formed. It is said its membership represented one-sixth of the world's wealth - and no unwanted or uninvited person ever visited the island from 1888-1942. Today 35% of the island is developed. The other 65% will be preserved in a natural state. Resort facilities include 63 holes of golf, a convention center, nine miles of beach, tennis complex, a summer waterpark, soccer complex, nature center, bike trails and fishing piers. The JEKYLL ISLAND HISTORIC DISTRICT is one of the largest restoration projects in the Southeast.
